Carnations and roses are the two most popular flowers which are sold for fundraisers. Some might ask 'why carnations?' It is important to keep in mind the following when organizing a fundraiser with flowers: Cost, Ease of Care, Durability and Potential Profit.
Cost: Carnations are about as inexpensive of a flower as they come - especially at major holidays. Carnations often cost half as much as roses and other types of flowers. A low cost means you can price them very competitively and sell a lot of them!
Ease of Care: Carnations are extremely easy to care for. Upon receipt of bulk carnations you simply chop 'em and plop 'em! 'Chop' the stems about 1 inch up from the bottom and 'plop' them in buckets of water. Carnations do not need to be refrigerated and can easily be stored at room temperature. Carnations are shipped in an early blooming stage and can last 10 days to 2 weeks without a problem.
Durability: Carnations are about as hardy as they come! These resilient little flowers can withstand being out of water for an extended period of time and can easily handle being bumped around and dropped. They are exceptional flowers for fundraisers (especially at schools and churches) as they can handle being out of water for several hours as well as all of the bumps and jostles which occur on the way home. Once home, a simple cut of the stem and some fresh water and the carnations will continue to look great for another 7 to 10 days!
Potential Profit: While some flowers such as roses can bring in a premium price, you also incur premium expenses. Carnations are inexpensive flowers which can be sold at a profit with little effort - even at a very low price point! When selling flowers, keep in mind your target audience. Typically kids/students won't have much cash on hand; however, just about any kid can come up with a dollar whether it be digging through the car, backpack or mooching it off of a friend!
