Fundraising 101: How Many Flowers Do I Need?

The second part of our Fundraiser 101 series by Grower's Box touches on figuring out how many flowers you will need for your fundraiser. Unfortunately we can't tell you exactly how many stems you'll need; however, we do have some great tips and advice that we have pulled together over the last 10 years that might prove helpful on fundraising with flowers.

Congratulations on choosing to go with flowers for your fundraiser! Next step is determining the quantity of flowers you will need. There are many things you will need to take into consideration in order to find the quantity which is right for you:

Success with Existing Fundraisers: Have you had fundraisers in the past? Were you successful with them? This is very important to consider when choosing the quantity of flowers you will be ordering. For example, if you know you sold 1,000 candy bars last Valentine's Day, you can, with reasonable certainty (considering you put the same effort into the fundraiser as the previous year and are at a similar price point) know that you will most likely sell 1,000 flowers this year.

Price Point: Price is always an important factor when organizing a fundraiser. It is important to price flowers so that people will buy them, but also so that you a make sufficient ROI (return on investment) to make the fundraiser worthwhile. A few thoughts are to keep the price at an even number. For example, make it $1.00 per stem. If you go fancy with $1.25 per stem you will wind up dealing with a lot of loose change! Your price point will also vary by flower type. Carnations tend to be less expensive flowers while roses are going to cost more per-stem. If you are looking for a lower price point, think carnations! They are very affordable, hardy and easy to care for!

Target Market: It is important to consider who you are selling the flowers to. If you are selling them to kids, keep in mind they may not have cash on hand (I certainly didn't when I was a kid… but maybe times have changed). If you are selling to adults who know and understand that the funds generated will be going to a good cause, they will be more likely to pay a little more for the flowers.

Pre-Selling: Some organizations pre-sell flowers for fundraisers. This helps in many ways as it allows organizers to gauge interest and more importantly know exactly how many flowers are needed (actually purchased). With that quantity pre-sold, additional flowers can be purchased for sale to those who thought not to pre-order, or those who may want to purchase more at a later time. Selling the flowers at a 'pre-sale discount' is always a great incentive to spur sales.

There is a lot to consider when trying to figure out the quantity of flowers you will need for your fundraiser. At the end of the day, our recommendation is to order enough flowers that you know you'll sell, then order a few more. With fundraisers the goal is to raise money. Anything you have left over counts against you. If this is your first time planning a fundraiser with flowers, we highly recommend starting with a smaller quantity (keeping the numbers reasonable) and selling out. That way you make money, have nothing leftover and know that the next time you need to go bigger and better!
